This report is based on Chinese-English translation of Offshore Wind Farms Technology,Design and Operation(Chapter Eight)which involves five parts:key issues in generator design, types and principles of operation in electrical generators, practical design and manufacture of electrical generators, selection of generators for offshore wind turbines and future trends in offshore wind turbine generators. The source text is categorized into informative text on science and technology.Having analyzed and studied the source text and project process, the report illustrates the role of "Functional Equivalence" upheld by Eugene A.Nida playing in technical translation. In other words, the purpose of technical translation is to achieve functional equivalence in content and meaning.Under the guidance of "Functional Equivalence",the report deals with difficulties in translation by adopting methods to extend and explicate semantic content,to follow the original syntax order and to reinvent sentence structure. It is possible that such solutions to difficulties may be referential in translating texts related to offshore wind power turbine. At the end,the report summarizes what the translator has learnt and introspected.Besides highly professional spirits,a qualified translator should be equipped with diverse knowledge, especially in technology and science field. In addition,it is necessary for the translator who doesn’t major in electricity and science to build up corpus and to translate again after revising.
