Recent years,with the implementation of the “Going global” strategy of Chinese culture,the “Going global” process of Chinese ethnic minorities' culture is speeding up evidently.Its position and function in cultural exchange with foreign countries are becoming more and more crucial,which has become a hot topic overseas.This is a C-E translation task on the first six chapters of Historical Stories of Chinese Ethnic Minorities,a collection of historical stories of ancient Chinese ethnic minorities,which centers on cultures,politics,histories,geography,and social organization structures.Its language features abundance of proper nouns,cultureloaded words and classical Chinese sentences.Since the text requires a certain level of professional knowledge of Chinese history,geography and culture,the translation aims to convey the contents of the source text correctly and to transmit Chinese ethnic minorities' culture accurately.The emphasis and difficulty of the translation task are the comprehension of the source text and the translation of culture-bound expressions that include cultureloaded expressions,classical Chinese,and rhetorical devices.It is hard to find equivalent expressions in the target language to deliver unique Chinese ancient characteristics or ethnic minorities' features.So,the source text was translated under the strategy of foreignization on culture-bound expressions.For retaining the cultural connotation of the source text,methods of transliteration with annotation and literal translation were adopted in most cases.The style of the source text was not reserved in some cases in order to correctly communicate Chinese ethnic minorities' culture.The translation techniques to tackle grammar differences between English and Chinese are also discussed: replacement by pronouns,possessive pronouns and synonyms,conversion and negation,omission and addition,voice change,readjustment,separation and combination.The Translation of Historical Stories of Chinese Ethnic Minorities(excerpt)is expected to help the foreign readers informed of the historical origin of Chinese ethnic minorities and their relationships with the Central Plain of China in history,which demonstrates that the veins of Han and ancient ethnic minorities are bounded in ancient times.This is conducive to the international society on realizing the historical background of China as a unified multi-ethnic country,and is of great practical value for them to understand the current China's policies towards ethnic minorities and minority regions development.
