Nowadays, increasingly more people try to start their own businesses and to make innovations.Under this circumstance, the demand for patent translation talents is rising sharply too. However, patent translation teaching and related research are not perfect and few foreign language colleges have set up patent translation majors.Meanwhile, the number of adept translators with rich background knowledge is far from meeting the demand of the market today. In other words, patent translation has broad development space as a new field. The report summarizes the characteristics of patent texts and previous studies on it.Patents, literally, refer to the rights and interests that owned by individual or organization exclusively and legally. It is a form of intellectual property and an intangible asset.Patent translation can be regarded as a kind of science and technology translation. The depth of research and study in patent is not enough, because most scholars at home and abroad have mainly explored the practical level of patent translation without systemized and generalized theory studies. In this thesis, the writer hopes that Skopos Theory can be applied into patent translation, which enlightens the particular translation studies. An American patent text which called Optical Sensor was chosen as the translation material for the translation practice report.Besides,Skopos Theory was chosen by the writer,in which the three rules of the theory guides the particular translation practice.Different parts of the patent have different functions and purposes. Therefore,In case analysis, the translator focuses on the two important parts of patents, namely,Description of Invention and Claims to illustrate the application of the three principles in patent translation and the corresponding translation strategies. The translator hopes that this report will provide valuable experience for future patent translation studies.
