A Report On The Translation Of Making Anew My Home:A Memoir(Excerpts)

This is a report on translating Chapter Eight of the book Making Anew My Home: A Memoir by Mathew Zachariah,an Indian-Canadian.The translator aims at probing into the translation of autobiographic literature in this translation project.In the memoir,the author talks about his experiences of living in India,America and Canada and immigrating to Canada with his families to be a university professor,trying to reflect the influence of these three kinds of cultures on shaping his identity and thus to seek his cultural identity in the global context.Autobiographic literature is featured by authenticity and literariness.In Newmark's text typology and semantic and communicative translation theory,autobiography is categorized into expressive texts and its translated version should accurately convey the“truth” and contextual meaning.Thus semantic translation should be adopted more frequently.In this report,the translator analyzes the translation strategies of nominalization,long and complex sentences and culture-loaded images and their adaptability on autobiographic literature.This report consists of four parts.The introduction to the author,the book and the whole project are all included in the task description part.In the process description part,pre-translation preparations including dictionaries,parallel text,quality control procedures and time schedule are all included.In the case study part,the translator introduces Newmark's text types and probes into the strategies of translating nominalization,long and complex sentences and culture-loaded images under semantic translation principle.Finally,the translator concludes solutions to the main problems in the translating process.
