The development of economic globalization is so fast.Single English talents trained in general English teaching may not adapt to the international strategic needs of the country.Employers look favorably on the application-oriented talents with strong English skills and proficiency in professional business.It takes the training of students' English application ability as its core in higher vocational colleges.It attaches great importance to make students to use English and focus on ability oriented.Practicality and professionalism are the key points in ESP teaching and also reflect a major feature of English Teaching in higher vocational colleges.Therefore,ESP teaching is bound to arise the attention of higher vocational colleges.It will also become the future direction of higher vocational English teaching.Through the questionnaire from students researcher further understands the current situation of ESP teaching in Baotou Iron and Steel Vocational Technical College and knew students' learning needs for ESP,then researcher deeply analyzes the main problems in ESP teaching and found out the reasons for these problems through the interview with teachers.On this basis,a new teaching model combining project teaching method with situation teaching method is put forward.The feasibility of the new teaching model is verifiedby taking hotel English of Baotou Iron and Steel Vocational Technical College as an example.In this research,200 students from 6 majors in ESP course were selected as respondents of questionnaire and 5 teachers who teach ESP course are chosen as interviewees.60 students in hotel management class were selected as the research subjects of teaching experiment.This study mainly answers the following three research questions:1.What are the main problems of ESP teaching in Baotou Iron and Steel Vocational Technical College?2.What leads to the problems of ESP teaching in Baotou Iron and Steel Vocational Technical College?3.What are the teaching effects of the improved teaching method on ESP teaching?The results of the research are as follows: the questionnaire investigation shows that most of the students have a strong motivation to learn ESP and realize the importance of ESP in their future work and they are willing to learn this course,but the investigation also indicates that ESP teaching effect and the students' learning effect were all not satisfactory in Baotou Iron and Steel Vocational Technical College.Through interviews with ESP teachers,the researcher has found the reasons for these problems: Most teachers do not pay attention to the need analysis of the students or there has been a deviation in the analysis of students' needs.Teachers' teaching level and knowledgestructure didn't match very well.ESP course setting is not reasonable and the use of teaching materials is confused in teaching.The most important reason is the backwardness of the teaching model.After a semester's teaching experiment,it is proved that the new teaching model is more helpful than the traditional one in improving students' ESP scores.It also helps to improve students' ability to read and write in ESP.Specific project oriented teaching design and implementation in ESP class can make students better understand the basic service flow of hotel workplace and can master the common English service language in different departments of hotel.What's more,students are able to communicate with the guests and deal with the related business of different departments in English.It is helpful to cultivate the senior technical personnel.Based on the above conclusions,this paper presents some implications for the ESP teaching and discusses some limitations of this research.
