Abstract/Summary:
In recent years, global warming has caused great inconvenience and threat to human life. The publication of Paul Hawken’s book Drawdown:The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming(Drawdown)has confirmed, measured and simulated one hundred substantive solutions, which contributes a great deal to putting an end to global warming.Chapter One of this book highlights the technologies and strategies supplanting energy production from fossil fuels. The translation and the introduction of this book are just as the saying goes "A raw jade as a stone embedding in a mountain, could be dug out with stones from another".In China, carbon dioxide emissions have been increasing year by year in order to keep up the accelerating development of economy in recent years. Therefore, the development of low-carbon economy has become an inevitable choice for China.Drawdown is a popular science book. With the rapid development of globalization and the marching progress in science and technology, the scientific and technological exchanges between countries are increasingly frequent, more and more popular science books make their way overseas to China. As one of the most important medium of science and technology exchanges, popular science books can not only disseminate scientific knowledge to readers, but also improve their scientific literacy as well as promote the material and spiritual civilization of society. Therefore, improving the quality of popular science book translation is an urgent duty and obligation for translators. The translator applied Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory to the translation of the popular science book, which means in the process of translation we should not only focus on the form of text, but also consider the reaction of the target language readers,in order to produce a high-quality translation text as well as promote the effective transmission of popular science information. This report is composed of five chapters. The first chapter gives an overview of the translation project, including the background, the purpose and the significance of it.The second chapter gives a brief introduction to the content, the author and the linguistic features of the source text.Chapter Three focuses on the process of the translation from three aspects:pre-translation preparation,while-translation and quality control.Chapter Four presents the essence of the translation project. It illustrates detailed analysis of the translation techniques in translating under the guidance of functional equivalence theory by means of case analysis and demonstrates the difficulties in the translating process. The last chapter summarizes the lessons acquired from the translation practice and problems to be solved.
