Translation Of Angle Of Repose(Excerpt)

This report is based on E-C translation of Angle of Repose(Excerpt)written by Wallace Stegner.He won Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1972 with this book.Angle of Repose focuses on marriage and reveals that so-called marriage is an angle of repose.In 2011,the first Chinese version of Angle of Repose prepared jointly by Wen Ren Jingjing and Shen Yuan was published by Jilin Literature&History Publishing House.This translation,however,is incomplete and substantial parts of the novel were left untranslated.This project aims to supply the omitted portions of the novel with reference to the first Chinese version and improve on the first Chinese version where necessary.In the report,the author discusses how she improves on the first Chinese version of some terms and how she translates the omitted texts for the first time.Specifically,she discusses translation of Spanish and German words,the skillful use of footnote,the strategies of amplification,omission,negation and how to deal with long and complex sentences using the techniques of division,composition and shift.Finally,the author summarizes this translation practice and puts forward suggestions and limitations.The author hopes her translation will provide the Chinese readers the access to the full novel and her translation strategies will be useful to the other novel translators.
