Angle of Repose,a 1971 novel by Wallace Stegner, features prominently in 20th contemporary American literature. This is the second time that Angle of Repose is brought in into China. The existing translated version of Angle of Repose has a large amount of pretermission. The author hopes to provide readers with a complete translated work and some valuable reference to Wallace Stegner's related studies. The translation of Angle of Repose is one of the subitems of the English-Chinese translation project from Shanghai 99 Readers'Culture Co.,Ltd.The author,as a member of this translation team, assumed the obligation of translating chapter 7 to chapter 9 of Angle of Repose,This translation report is based on these three chapters the author translated, including The Canyon,The Mesa and The Zodiac Cotttage. In pursuit of the closest natural equivalence in meaning and style, the translator decides to select Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory as the guiding theory, mainly analyzing the original text and existing translation version at the lexical level, syntactic level and stylistic level. The text includes many translation difficulties, such as proper nouns, culture loaded words, different types of texts and so on.At lexical level, the translator uses the translation methods of amplification and conversion of part of speech to achieve equivalence on content. At syntactic level, the translator adopts the strategies of restructuring, division and combination to make the target language readable and smooth. And at stylistic level, the author analyzes translation of dialect and figures of speech to reproduce the original writing style of Angle of Repose,so that the content and form of target text can be equivalent to the source text.It is found that Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory is a feasible theory to guide E-C translation practice. The author hopes to attract more Chinese readers and improve his translation level by writing this translation practice report and summing up the difficulties and tactics met in translation.
