In the Country of Men,an literary novel published in 2006 and had been translated into thirty languages, written by an American born British-Libyan writer Hisham Matar. This report takes the excerpted part of the novel to study the function and translation methods of the non-predicate in literary text in order to bridge the Eastern and Western culture exchange. As the expressions of English and Chinese are different, the present report identifies the translation difficulty – the selection of translation strategies. This report makes a detailed analysis and conclusion on the translation from the morphology and syntax. With regard to the lexical level, the translator mainly employs translation skills such as amplification, omission and conversion; As for the difficulties in the syntactical level, like long and complicated sentences, the author adopts division, combination, and inversion translation. In the translation practice,Skopos theory is revered as the theoretical guidance, under which this report explores translation strategies for non-predicate.By relevant case studies, the conclusion can be drawn as follows: non-predicate verbs have the characteristics of both verbs and adjectives, and play different roles in sentences. It requires translator to get across the main meaning of the sentence, analyze the structure of the sentence, compare the predicate verb with the non-predicate,and finally use the following translation methods to faithfully and smoothly translate the original sentence into Chinese.
