Abstract/Summary:
This report is based on the translation practice of four chapters(Chapters1-4)from Trumpocracy : The Corruption of the American Republic. The book was written by David Frum, president of the Policy Exchange, editor of the Atlantic Monthly, conservative political commentator in support of the Bush administration,as well as a speechwriter for President George W.Bush from 2001 to 2002.Published in January 2018,the book,in a sharp, objective and humorous tone, reveals some unknown information about Donald Trump and his family, analyzes the reasons for his popularity in the American society, his solid voters base and his distinctive personality that distinguishes himself from the traditional Establishment.Sceptical about Trumpocracy, the author expects the conservative majority to establish a new political ecology other than Trumpocracy.Meanwhile, through depiction of the situation of the different American social strata, the author analyzes the awkwardness of "working-class whites" and provides the thought-provoking reasons why “liberalism” is not well received among the social class. Moreover, the author expresses his hope that conservatism will not stick to its old path but find a new way out.A distinctive feature of the English language,non-predicate verbs can be found in almost all texts. This book is no exception.Unaffected by such factors as person and number,non-predicate verbs can perform various grammatical functions, covering nearly all the sentence components other than predicates. The author of the thesis sorts out the problems in translating the non-predicate verbs in the book and sums up corresponding solutions.Hopefully, the research outcome will do a service to the author and other translators. This report consists of five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction to the background, significance and content of this translation task. The second chapter narrates the task process, including preparation, translation and proofreading, etc. In the third chapter, literature review, the author summarizes the literature with regard to non-predicate verbs and their translation strategies. The main body of the report is the fourth chapter, which exemplifies the problems and countermeasures in the translation of non-predicate verbs. The problems mainly include:improper handling the master-subordinate relationship and the logical relationship between the predicate and the non-predicate verbs, inappropriate choice of the contextual meaning of non-predicate verbs as well as the awkwardness incurred by trying to copy the original grammatical structure. As for each of the problems, the author offers his solutions, which may provide some insights for other translators. In the last chapter, the author shares some thoughts about this translation practice and some understanding of translation.
