The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English provided a critical and diachronic overview of the development of literary translation as art or industry,in English-speaking world for the first time,and it revealed how literary translation challenges,enriches and coverts traditional English literature.The original text language is narrative and discussion with strong academic nature,containing plenty of literary terms,names and book titles.It shows operations of literary translation in certain social contexts and helps readers re-think English literature's formation and development.Translation,the growth of English literature and the formation of English literary classics has been neglected in the past.There are many studies on English literature history,yet history of literary translation in English lacks comprehensive research.This argument,based on numerous facts and data,shows that the growth of English literature is deeply influenced by translated literature.This unprecedented undertaking is also of great challenging.Therefore,the translation of this book has not only historical significance but also literary merit.This book's translation has its own specificity,for it aims at revealing how the English language completed its evolution into what we now recognize as its modern form more directly and profoundly,as well as how the development and evolution of English literature translation history was influenced by various foreign writing methods.This translation report includes six parts:text background,text language analysis,translation theory,case analysis and summary.Case analysis is the core part of this report,which focuses on reflecting author's translation thinking and translation methods,and combines with the original material to further illustrate the translation strategies in the translation process.The author begins with the preparations before translation,using Nida's functional equivalence theory as theory support,word equivalence,syntax equivalence,paragraphs equivalence,stylistic equivalence as the translation principle.Also,the author uses translation methods like literal translation,free translation,amplification and class shift to analyze the material.In the translation process,the author mainly adopts the method of literal translation to translate the text into Chinese accurately,which embodies the essence of Chinese culture,at the same time,by adopting the methods of free translation,amplification,class shift to analyze and translate the difficulties of vocabulary and syntax to make the translation work vivid.In order to achieve equivalence between the target text and the original text and retain the essence of the original,the author consults many parallel texts,CNKI literatures and dictionary as well as Wikipedia,Baidu encyclopedia and other tools to facilitate translating and understanding.For all sorts of problems and difficulties in the translation process,the author also finds out the solution.In the end,the author concludes the unresolved problems in the process of translation and summarizes the experience during this translation practice.Through translating excerpts chapter from The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English and writing the report,the author deeply realizes that translating needs solid professional skills and profound literary attainments,thus achieving the purpose to faithfully transfer English culture information to Chinese readers.The translation report is not the end;it tests the learning outcomes,and also finds my weaknesses timely,accumulating experience for my translation work in the future.
