It is recognized that widely-used English texts of agricultural science and technology are precise, logical and brief, mainly reflected in lexis, syntax and rhetoric. In terms of syntax, passive voice,normalization,non-finite verbs and long sentences are frequently used in the text, among which non-finite verbs are particularly critical, not only in endowing the language with creativity and vividness in expression, but also in optimizing the structure of the sentences by flexible conversion,in case of looseness and obscurity. Therefore,it is no easy job to understand and deal with complex and varied non-finite verbs in scientific English. With examples in English texts of agricultural science and technology, this thesis aims to introduce the definition and classification of non-finite verbs, and to summarize translation methods based on syntactic functions and pragmatic functions.Non-finite verbs refer to the verbs that do not serve as the predicate of a sentence.Generally,non-finite verbs can be divided into infinitives and participles,or divided into infinitives, participles, and gerunds.Participles among them include present participles and past participles. In a sentence,an infinitive can be used as subject, object, predictive, modifier, adverbial,or complement;a participle can be used as predictive, modifier, adverbial, complement;gerund can be used as subject, object, predictive,or modifier. Therefore,a non-finite verb has something in common with a noun(infinitive and gerund),adjective(infinitive, participle, gerund),and adverb(infinitive, participle).Furthermore, the pragmatic function of a non-finite verb is about the effects of speech expressed by the non-finite verb in a specific context, concerning its presupposed function, decorate function, and cohesive function. In short, when acting as subject and object, the infinitive and gerund, equivalent to a noun, have presupposed function.Acting as modifier, the infinitive and participle, equivalent to am adjective, have decorate function. As adverbial, the infinitive and participle, equivalent to an adverb, have cohesive function.According to the above summary, this thesis will respectively cite examples of non-finite verbs in the corresponding text,to analyze the case for the purpose of translation.
