This paper is a translation project report on the novel Cloudstreet by Australian author Tim winton. The novel describes the story of two ordinary families who encounter each other in Perth,a big city in western Australia after experiencing different family tragedies. The novel is unadorned, concise and humorous, which makes readers feel different exotic feelings and reading experience, and conveys the yearning of ordinary people to create a better life. Therefore, the author takes it as the object of this project report. This novel has its own school of its own in terms of language features. It mainly adopts the spoken dialogue of the characters in a flat and straightforward way to shape their inner activities and personality tendencies.A large number of slang, figure of speech and onomatopoeic words are also used in the writing, which enhances the interest and vividness of the whole novel. In view of such language style, this paper takes the translation theory of domestication and foreignization proposed by Lawrence Venuti,a famous American translator,as the theoretical guidance, and attempts to combine literal translation, free translation, transliteration and other translation methods in the translation process, and discusses in detail the key and difficult problems in C.loudstreet.Chapter I of this report is the background of the project, including the source, significance and structure of the project;Chapter two makes a brief analysis of the original text from four aspects:the author of the original text, the creation background, the language characteristics and the main content. In the third chapter of the report, case analysis in the process of english-chinese translation is mainly elaborated, which covers the specific details in the process of translation.Through this practice, the author summarizes three laws in the practical application of domestication and foreignization translation theories.Firstly, the author finds that foreignization translation theory is more applicable to the translation at the lexical level, especially the translation of culture-loaded words and onomatopoeic words, which can maintain the unique cultural heritage of the original text by combining literal translation and transliteration.Secondly, the author finds that the theory of domestication is more suitable for syntactic translation, especially for the translation of oral dialogues. Finally,in the process of translation, the author finds that it is possible to combine the two theories in some cases. In addition, through this practice, the author not only learned about the local conditions and customs of the common people in Australia in the last century, but also gradually improved the ability to translate literary texts, and gained a lot.
