This thesis is an English-Chinese translation project report. The source text for this translation practice is excerpted from the novel The Silence of the Girl.s by Pat Barker,a contemporary British female writer. It includes the first four chapters of the novel. From the perspective of Briseis the protagonist and also the narrator of the novel, this part mainly describes the miserable change of Briseis' life caused by wars, making her a slave of Achilles. This novel is a first-person narration and f-ocuses on the inner world of the character. The novel is attractive especially for its flexible and unique features in the choice of words and building of sentences. In this translation practice,Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence is chosen as the guiding principle and effective translation strategies and techniques are adopted to deal with the main two difficulties in translation. The first is about words. Some words in the source text are concise yet with deeper meanings behind. However, there are no counterparts in the target language at all if translated literally. Therefore, liberal translation method has been used and some words extended to achieve the equivalence between the target text and source text. The second is about sentences, especially about the translation of long and difficult sentences. On the basis of understanding the logic within the original sentences, the author has adopted relevant translation techniques such as splitting, reorganization and amplification to eliminate trans ationese.Through this translation practice, the translator has realized that a good novel translation is inseparable from the translator's constant polishing.Based on complete understanding of the source text, the translator should apply suitable translation strategies and techniques to achieve the equivaleince,so that the target languagereaders can receive the same reading experience as the source language readers.
