Eco-translatology summarizes translation strategies as "three-dimensional"transformation,namely translators,on the principle of "multi-dimensional adaptation and adaptive selection",should make relatively concentrated adaptive selection in linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions. In the novel Heart of Stone, the author employed words carrying contextual meanings and complex long sentences, coined proper nouns that bear specific cultural connotations and designed heaps of dialogues, and they posed linguistic, cultural and communicative difficulties to this translation project. Therefore, this paper tries to apply the three-dimensional transformation strategy of eco-translatology to the translation practice of Heart of Stone and investigate the guiding role that eco-translatology plays in novel translation. This paper first introduces the basic theory of eco-translatology and illustrates its applicability to novel translation and then discusses with specific cases the guiding significance of eco-translatology to this translation practice in linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions. In linguistic dimension, adaptive selection for linguistic forms is made with strategies like semantic addition, conversion of part of speech and conversion of sentence patterns to select expressions appropriate to the context of the source text and that of the target text and make authors' ideas get fully across in the target language. In cultural dimension, adaptive selection for the cultural connotations of the source language culture and the target language culture is made through domestication, foreignization and amplification to properly convey the cultural connotations of the proper nouns. In communicative dimension, adaptive selection for the bilingual communicative intentions is made?with focus fixed on the translation of mood senses and personal pronouns to ensure that the communicative intentions of the source text are reproduced in the target text.
