Cultural relics contain not only the ancient civilization, but also exist as the witness of history and culture.Cultural relics exhibition texts are important media for visitors to know about the cultural relics exhibited in museums.According to the National Museum Directory released by National Cultural Relics Bureau, there are 5,136 museums of all levels listed on it.The vigorous development of the museum industry is an important manifestation of the improvement of soft power of Chinese culture. And museums in our country attract many visitors at home and overseas for its collection with long history and profound cultural value. It is the cultural relics exhibition texts that play as the bridge that help the visitors conquer the blocks of cultural differences.President Xi said,“The museum is a large school. It must be well protected and managed. We should study and make good use of the cultural relics which are condensed with traditional Chinese culture,so that artifacts can survive, let the history speak, and give the contemporary people national confidence and historical inspiration.” Therefore,in order to better promote the publicity work of museums and better introduce the Chinese history and culture,it is extremely necessary to study the cultural relics exhibition texts. As a prominent part of international publicity translation, the C-E translation of cultural relics exhibition texts is an important channel for the world to understand Chinese culture. With the Skopos theory as the theoretical framework and the method of case study, comparative analysis and induction-summarization,this thesis firstly attempts to explore the different characteristics of Chinese cultural relics exhibition texts in first-level museums at home,Palace Museum,Henan Museum and Shaanxi History Museum and the English texts selected from the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the textual and linguistic aspects. It is discovered that more and more museums has began to provide C-E translation of cultural relics exhibition texts, but the cultural relics translation started late in our country and until now the study of C-E translation of cultural relics exhibition texts does not form a complete and systematic standard.Because there exist many differences in the geography, history, culture and politics between C-E cultural relics exhibition texts and Western cultural relics exhibition texts, the effect of trans-lingual and trans-cultural communication wanes. In the first-level national museums, such as Henan Museum,Hubei Provincial Museum and Shaanxi History Museum, problems still could be found. These problems include omission of information,word-for-word translation of cultural relics texts and lack of necessary background information.Such problems have made it difficult for foreign visitors to form a more comprehensive and correct understanding of Chinese culture, thus affecting the publicity of cultural relics in museums and the influence of cultural communication has been weakened. On the basis of the analysis, the C-E translation of cultural relics exhibition texts should refer to the textual and linguistic characteristics of texts in foreign museums and adopts a more familiar and understandable way for foreign visitors.Based on these discoveries, the translation strategies are discussed, including supplying sufficient text content, tagging culture-loaded words with special terms and rearranging sequences of information and applying human-centered and self-confident language. This thesis could provide a valuable and theoretical reference to the study of C-E translation of cultural relics exhibition texts in museums and then to some extent promote the dissemination of Chinese culture.Taking English version of cultural relics exhibition texts as a cultural bridge and window to show the world the profoundness of Chinese civilization, which can break the barriers of ideology and cultural concepts, and demonstrate the past, present and future of China to the world.
