The original text of this translation project is selected from History of Egypt,Chaldea,Syria,Babylonia,and Assyria in the Light of Recent by the British archaeologist L·W·King.In this book,the author elaborates on a series of new discoveries and new views on prehistoric Egypt with comprehensive detailed description and examples.In this translation practice report,the first chapter of the book was selected as the translation practice material.The first chapter explains the current situation of the research on the history of prehistoric Egypt,and carries out the elaboration and demonstration of the new discoveries of prehistoric Egypt step by step,which provides the background and lays the foundation for the following chapters.Although the content of the article is professional,it is also readable to the normal readers,which greatly enriches the blank of the history of prehistoric Egypt,and makes great contributions to the academic research of the industry.The main problems that the translator encounters in the process of translation practice include the translation of professional terms,ancient or rare words and the long sentences.In addition,there are a lot of historical translation problems in the book,such as the translation of many place names and people s names.Due to the long-time passing by,many expressions need to be verified and compared.In order to achieve the better translation,the translator adopts the functional equivalence theory of Eugene Nida as a primary basis,using the semantic supplementation,the words conversion,the sentence integration and the specific strategies to solve the problems in the translation process.This translation practice report,combined with the content of translation,makes a specific description of the three stages of translation:before translation,during translation and after translation.In addition,it elaborates on different cases based on the difficulties in translation.There are still some deficiencies in this practice.The translator learns a lot from this translation project and the report.In terms of vocabulary,the translator mainly completes the translation of professional terms by searching for official information and materials,striving for accuracy and authority:For the proper nouns,transliteration is required when dealing with the names of people and places,and free translation is also necessary for the translation of book titles;Cultural lexicon should be explained and supplemented appropriately;In terms of syntax,passive sentences can be converted into active sentences,and long sentences can be properly segmented and reorganized according to the logical relations;In the aspect of culture,the translator should truly understand the cultural meaning of the original text,and dedicate to fully express the meaning of the original text,as well as maintaining the dynamic balance between the source language and the target language;In terms of text type,the translator acquires a deeper understanding:The original texts in different professional fields have completely different characteristics and language expressions from that of other majors,which is an opportunity and a challenge for the translator.
