| This is a project report on the English-Chinese translation of Limited Partnership Agreement of a Delaware Limited Partnership.In August 2017,during the internship in Shanghai Lawtone Translation Co.,Ltd.,the author was entrusted to translate Limited Partnership Agreement of a Delaware Limited Partnership from English to Chinese.The source text,including the cover and catalog,contains a total of 19,471 words.The author only translated part of it from Article VII to Article XIII plus appendices,totaling 10,031 words,which was expected to be finished in one month.The Partnership agreement is a necessary legal document for the establishment of a partnership organization.It is a basic legal document that defines the rights and obligations of a partner.It is also a necessary legal document for a partnership organization to report to the competent authority.Legal English is gradually formed through long-term judicial practice,which has a unique expression model and norms.It also has distinctive lexical and syntactic features,reflecting the professionalism,dignity,and preciseness of legal language.Therefore,there are high requirements for accuracy and professionalism in translating such texts.Prior to translation,the author accumulated a certain amount of practical experience in English legal text and consulted a lot of parallel texts of foreign partnerships.In addition,the author learned the background knowledge of many partnerships and strived to make the translation text comply with the basic principles of legal translation.At the same time,in accordance with the review and revision of the tutor and by combining legal language features,learning legal English general language and legal vocabulary,referring to a number of examples of translation errors,the author revised the translated version again and again to ensure the accuracy and consistency of the full text.This report analyzes the difficulties and summarized solutions encountered in translation process.According to the existing legal translation studies,four principles applicable to the translation of English legal texts for this task are determined.Under the guidance of four principles,the causes of mistakes were explored and the specific solutions to specific problems are summarized.The translation report first analyzes the features of the source text in terms of six aspects,which are preference for formal and big words,preference for archaic words,common words with special meaning,frequent employment of long complicated sentences,frequent employment of special sentences and highly procedural features.Then the report reviews four principles applicable to legal language: principle of preciseness;principle of consistency;principle of conciseness;principle of professionalism.The report goes to the major solutions in accordance with the features analyzed.The major solutions are summarized as follows.In terms of the preference for formal and big words,translation method of standardizing technical words is employed to ensure the principle of preciseness.Archaic words are translated into classical Chinese words to ensure the principle of preciseness and consistency.In rendering of long and complex sentences,methods of division and restructuring are applied to ensure the principle of conciseness.As for the highly procedural features,the fixed legal sentence patterns are maintained under the guidance of the principle of professionalism. |
