As a language that keeps pace with the times,it changes with the changes of society.Vocabulary is the easiest one to change among the three elements of language.The emergence and evolution of new words reflect the development in a lot of areas in different levels,affecting people's thinking,the way people communicating and the content during people's communication.At the present,new Chinese words are constantly emerging,and there are more and more foreigners learning Chinese.While there is still a shortage of teaching about new words in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.The purpose of this thesis is to study the cognition of Chinese new words for students of advanced Chinese level,by understanding their attitudes,needs,learning and cognition.We also analyze the rules of foreign students' cognition,and to promote the study of new Chinese words by foreign students.In this study,107 foreign students of advanced Chinese level from Dalian University of Foreign Languages were selected as the survey subjects.The combination of questionnaires and interviews was used to examine the situation of foreign students' cognitive new words.The questionnaire included three parts: personal situation,learning situation and vocabulary acquisition.The data were statistically analyzed by Numbers and SPSS19.0.The attitudes and needs of foreign students on new words,the contact and path of new words,the learning of new words,and the acquisition situation were obtained.Based on the interviews with five international students,the paper presents the key points and difficulties that affect the new words of foreign students.The results show that the international students have good contact with Chinese new words and have a wide range of contacts.Most of the foreign students are motivated and active in learning new words.However,foreign students have poor grasp of new words,which mainly conclude the political words,economic words and words with multinomial meanings.The extra-linguistic factors which influence the new words are cultural background,time of staying in China,time of learning Chinese,and frequency of conversations with Chinese people.Intralingua factors include new sources of rich words and special word formation.In view of the above results,this paper points out some corresponding suggestions,and hopes to promote the study of new Chinese words learning by the foreign students.
