Simultaneous Interpreting(hereinafter referred to as SI)as a high-end interpreting activity poses great challenges to interpreters who are required to listen to what the speaker says and render it immediately into another language.Because of the distinctive characteristic of SI,interpreters need to adopt certain techniques to release their pressure and deal with various difficulties and problems occurring during the interpreting process.Gile's Effort Model is of great significance for guiding SI practice. This report, based on the interpreting task of Professor Toby Walsh's speech at Chinese Congress on Artificial Intelligence, focuses on the techniques that can be applied in English to Chinese simultaneous interpreting from the perspective of Gile's Effort Model. It summarizes four difficulties encountered during this SI practice, namely the interpreting of terminologies, complex sentences, disjointed sentences and redundant information.Techniques such as zero interpreting, literal interpreting, segmentation, addition and omission are discussed and illustrated with examples. These techniques prove useful to reduce the cognitive demands imposed by the simultaneous interpreting task.Interpreters can make full use of these techniques in an integrated way to cope with difficulties coming up in the process of interpreting, thus to get the information across to the audience in a concise and coherent manner. It is hoped this report can offer some insights into future simultaneous interpreting practice and help interpreters achieve better interpreting performance.
