Angle of Repose is a masterpiece of Wallace Stegner, and my translation is based on 2009 edition of Angle of Repose prefaced by Jackson J.Benson.Prior to my translation there was already a Chinese translation of fragments of the book published by Jilin Culture and History publisher in 2011.The published translation, however, was incomplete and missed out up to 60%of the original contents. The purpose of this project is to supply the missing part and modify the translated part. This translation project is commissioned by Shanghai 99 Readers'Culture Co.,Ltd.The author's supervisor is the director of this project. The author of this report,as a member of the project team,is in charge of the translation tasks of the introduction and chapter 1-3,on which this report is based.About 80,000 words were translated for the first time and marked with underline, the previously translated part was revised and marked with wavy line, the previously translated part without any changes was left unmarked. The report is based on this translation practice. It introduces the project, the novel Angle of Repose, the writer Wallace Stegner and describes translation process. It also discusses omissions in the first Chinese version and its influence, and analyzes in detail the problems the author encountered.Through case analysis, the author demonstrates that domestication should be used as a main strategy to appeal to the target readers.Specific techniques of domestication are employed such as the use of four-character Chinese collocation, amplification, word order adjustment and combination. At the same time, foreigization should also be used as a supplement to preserve cultural image and language style of the source text. The author concludes that to produce a faithful translation, omissions in the first Chinese version should be avoided and an alternative use of domestication and foreignization will appeal to target readers on the one hand and preserve the source culture and style on the other. The author hopes that the complete translation of the introduction and chapter 1-3 will help the Chinese readers better understand the theme and style of Angle of Repose. It is also hoped that the solutions to the problems he encountered in the translation will be useful to novel translation.
