This is a report on the translation of Part 9 of Employment Relations Act 2000 of New Zealand,which mainly focuses on the E-C translation of the attributive clauses in the source text.In the process of translating this text,the author has found that the frequent use of the attributive clauses in the text is one of major factors contributing to the length and complexity of sentences,making the translation of this text full of difficulties and challenges.Therefore,it is significant to study the E-C translation of the attributive clauses in legislative texts.In this report,firstly,the author analyzes the linguistic features of the source text that shares many common linguistic features of legal texts,such as the frequent use of archaic words,complex prepositional phrases,long sentences with an adverbial clause of condition or with an attributive clause etc.,and then briefly summaries the characteristics and types of attributive clauses.On this basis,the author proposes three translation skills in the translation of attributive clauses in legislative texts,i.e.,fronting,division and conversion.Those three skills are illustrated by using the examples from the Employment Relations Act 2000.Finally,the author draws a conclusion about the translation experience from this translation practice,and presents the problems still to be resolved.To sum up,a proper application of translation skills is really significant to deal with the translation of the attributive clauses in legislative texts.
