This is a report on the translation of Energy: A Human History by Richard Rhodes,of which Chapter Fifteen A Gift of God was selected as the source text. The book reveals the fascinating history behind energy transitions over time—wood to coal,to oil,to electricity and beyond by reviewing some important historical figures and events. The source text can be divided into two parts. The first part is about the transitions of the automobile engine systems. The second part mainly depicts the discovery of ethyl gasoline to solve the problem of engine knock, and the gasoline is highly controversial but still become the mainstream fuel. This report is divided into five chapters.Chapter One is the introduction of this translation project, consisting of project background, significance and structure of the report.Chapter Two is about the source text, including the introduction of the author, the main contents of the source text and features of the source text;and translation process, including preparations, initial translation, correction and final completion.Chapter Three is theoretical basis,in which Skopos Theory and translation methods and techniques under the guidance of this theory are introduced.Chapter Four offers case analysis, including the difficulties and corresponding solutions in the translation project. Methods used in translation include amplification, lexical shift, division and change of voices.Chapter Five concludes the report with the lessons learned from the project and problems to be solved.
