For those whose mother tongue is not Chinese,Chinese characters are not only a key to learning Chinese language but also a big challenge in learning progress.Actually,it is difficult to teach Chinese characters to non-Chinese speakers.Even worse,polyphones make both students and teachers feel more difficult to learn and teach.Its homographic characteristics always makes students find harder to learn either in listening,speaking,or in reading parts.This paper,which is mainly based on Chinese Proficiency Vocabulary and Characters Grading Outline,elaborates statistics and analysis of polyphones from the two most popular textbooks,Developing Chinese and Boya Chinese.This paper also refers research on polyphone for Chinese native speakers.It offers teaching strategies and opinions on polyphones in terms of teaching Chinese as a second language,which are essential for non-Chinese speakers to learn and understand polyphones better and to develop their communicating skills and Chinese proficiency.According to a survey conducted with 96 international students in three different schools,this paper involves consideration of their polyphones knowledge.In the polyphones' experiment,frequently used polyphones from “Outline” and the two major textbooks have been selected to conduct the research.It will make statistics and analyze the result of the research and the test.Then,solutions to the problems in the test will be found.Lastly,this paper aims at the problem that students face when they are learning Chinese and provides strategies and opinions of how to teach polyphones to non-native Chinese speakers.This paper includes five chapters.The first chapter describes the purpose of this paper,the current research situation,and the content and the method of the research.The second chapter involves statistics and analysis based on the polyphones from Chinese Proficiency Vocabulary and Characters Grading Outline and the two main textbooks.Chapter 3 illustrates the survey conducted with Shenyang University,Shenyang City Academy,and Bolv Academy foreign students,analyzes result of the survey and problems.Chapter 4 takes a deep consideration of the third chapter's survey result and offers some teaching techniques and opinions.The last chapter summarizes conclusion of this paper and points out the limitation of the study.
