Analysis And Research On Cross-cultural Adaptation Of Chinese Volunteer Teachers In Malaysia

In recent years,the relationship between China and Malaysia has become increasingly close.The two countries have continuously strengthened cooperation in different fields such as economy and trade,especially in the cultural field.The most representative one is the Confucius Institute University of Malaya,It is the first Confucius Institute in Malaysia.In recent years,the number of Chinese volunteer teachers in Malaysia has been increased.The issue of cross-cultural adaptation for Chinese volunteer teachers in Malaysia is particularly important.Chinese volunteer teachers would work and live better if they are better adapted to the teaching environment.Based on this,this study will focus on the cross-cultural adaptation of Chinese volunteer teachers who went to Malaysia during the year of 2017-2018.The study is based on the theory of cross-cultural adaptation,from the five dimensions of social life adaptation,psychological adaptation,language adaptation,job adaptation and cultural adaptation.36 volunteers were required to fill the questionnaire,and then on the basis of the questionnaire results,14 representative volunteers were selected for in-depth interviews to explore their cross-cultural adaptation characteristics and influencing factors.The study found that the cross-cultural adaptation of Chinese vonlunteer teachers in Malaysia was generally good,the best part is the job adaptation,and the worst is the psychological adaptation.Through data analysis,it is found that the level of Malay language of volunteers will affect the cross-cultural adaptation of volunteers.The higher the level of Malay language is,the better cross-cultural adaptation is.The volunteers who have good Malay language skills are more likely to integrate into the local environment and make cross-cultural adaptation faster.Above the research conclusions,this study puts forward the following suggestions:In terms of volunteer training,Hanban/Confucious Institute Headquarters should strengthen the training of Malay language,and increase language practice training to improve the target language level of volunteers;For the Confucius Institute,they should carry out pre-job and on-the-job training,giving the volunteers more support,especially the Malay language training;It is said that volunteers should be provided with an experience sharing platform to help volunteers understand the situation of the country in advance and make relevant preparations.For the volunteers themselves,they should continuously enhance their psychological adaptability,learn more Malay and improve their own cross-cultural adaptability.In the last part of this paper,it summarizes the results of the study and points out the limitations and shortcomings of this study.
