In recent years,learning Mandarin and Chinese culture has received increasing attention in Malaysia,The number of Confucius Institutes(classrooms)in Malaysia has also gradually increased.Among the groups teaching Chinese and spreading Chinese culture in Malaysia,Chinese teacher volunteers is the largest and most special group,which consists of almost students who just graduated from university or even not graduating.In a country different from China in many cultural aspects,lacking of teaching experience and social experience,whether they can adapt to local life and work,whether they will encounter difficulties,and how to solve the problems they may have,these are question worthy of attention and discussion.Based on previous research,in this article,we divide volunteers' cross-cultural adaptation into four aspects:life adaptation,work adaptation,social-cultural adaptation,and psychological adaptation.After conducting in-depth interviews with 7 volunteers working at 5 universities,we collected a large amount of interview records,we also collected many of the author 's own teaching logs and observation records as research materials.Then,we used Grounded-Theory method to analyze the cross-cultural adaptation status and influencing factors of volunteers while teaching in Malaysia.We found that all of the volunteers participating in the survey are in a good cross-cultural adaptation status,they indicated they can adapt to various aspects of local life,They mentioned the most about work-related adaptation,which is related to the nature of volunteer work.In addition,volunteers said that among many influencing factors,personal background,interpersonal communication,and local social and cultural background are factors influenced them the most.Based on the research results,we puts forward specific recommendations from three aspects:volunteers themselves,Hanban training,and Confucius Institute management.At the end of this article,we also summarized the conclusions and deficiencies of this study.
