The paper is a report based on the translation of the Chapter One & Two of The Leavers,which was written by a Chinese American female writer,Lisa Ko.The Leavers,a typical immigrant novel,mainly tells the story of a mother abandoned her son when the child was ten years old,and then the son came back to find her mother,reflecting the confusion and the complexity of immigrant issues.There are a lot of dialogues in the novel,which reflect the inner activities and emotional changes of characters.The paper belongs to the expressive text.Based on the text type of the original text,the author chooses the text typology theory as the guiding theory.The report takes the difficulties encountered in translation practice as the research object and analyzes translation strategies and methods from the aspects of rhetoric and emotion.Finally,it is concluded that the characters' personalities,social status,educational level should be fully considered in the process of translating dialogues and action.The paper includes four parts.The first part is a brief introduction to the source text and the significance of choosing this novel.The second part introduces the process of the translation practice,including preparation,translation tools and the determination of the translation theory.The third part is the most important part,analyzing the difficulties in the process of translation.The difficulties are the expression of human emotions and the translation of the rhetoric.Then the paper analyzes the problems and the specific methods and strategies adopted in the translation.The fourth part is a conclusion.The author chooses this novel as the translation material,aiming to show the living conditions of Chinese people in foreign countries for domestic readers and provide references for other translators in translating such novels.
