A Practice Report On Escort Interpretation To Hunan Museum In Chinese Foreign-aid Training Program

With the development of China's economy,cross-cultural exchanges are on the rise,and various forms of communication between countries are becoming more and more frequent.Training programs in recent years have played a very important role in cultural and trade exchanges between countries.In such training programs,interpreters act as a bridge and the cultural exchange and integration of participants from different countries can not be well achieved without them.One of the most convenient ways to learn more about the culture of a country or region is to visit the local museum.Interpreting the museum guides' presentation to a large number of people without taking notes will test the professional knowledge.of the escort interpreters and their ability to control the scene.This report is based on the author's real practice in escorting fifty participants to Hunan Museum.And the seminar on Agricultural Products Processing and Trading for Developing Countries,2018,was sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and organized by Hunan Agricultural Group Co.,Ltd..In the course of interpretation,the author finds that though the interpreter had made sufficient preparation to introduce Hunan Museum and collected relevant cultural terminologies,there were still many problems,among which the main one is that participants,from different cultural backgrounds,have different understandings as to the same thing.Besides,when they receive information in the target language,they will also form their own ideas of the exhibits displayed in the museum or the received information.Therefore,it may cause some information to be missing or misinterpreted in receiving the information in the target language.Based on these,the author finds it necessary to apply cultural compensation strategies in escort interpretation to the museum.During the process of escort interpreting,the author concludes that there are three main factors that lead to the differences in understanding:context of situation,psychological thinking and aesthetic subjects.Therefore,from the perspective of cultural compensation strategies and combined with practical cases,the author adopts three interpreting methods in the process of interpretation,and there is adaptation,omission and addition to cultural background information.Finally,by analyzing the practical examples in interpreting,the author summarizes the experience and limitations based on interpreting practice.
