This thesis took the Malaysian local Chinese textbook Gateway to Mandarin Chinese as an example,analyzed the compilation of vocabulary,grammars,texts,and exercises.Meanwhile,it collected the feedback information from users.Based on this study,the thesis has obtained the textbook's advantages and disadvantages,and given practical and concrete suggestions for its' better compilation.The advantages of this textbook are highly targeted at students' daily life,and it has taken into the students' age,mother tongue background and interests.Moreover,the number and difficulty of grammars are moderate,the vocabularies have local characteristics,and the topics can basically meet the students' Chinese communicative needs.However,the disadvantages are the following: Firstly,the teaching objectives are not clear,it doesn't meet the requirements of syllabus.Secondly,the system of textbook arrangement is insufficient.Thirdly,there is a lack of grammatical interpretation between native language and target language,and lack of Chinese character teaching and cultural introduction parts.The suggestions for improvement of this textbook are as following: to clear the teaching objectives and to arrange the order of grammars,meanwhile,to add grammatical interpretation,Chinese characters' teaching parts,cultural introduction,and communicative practice.In order to meet the needs of compiling a better Malaysian local Chinese textbooks,this thesis also gives suggestions.For example,to formulate a Chinese syllabus which suits for Malaysia and to unify the standards for compiling textbooks,to draw lessons from the experience of compiling textbooks for teaching Chinese as first language,and to strengthen Sino-Malaysian cooperation in compiling textbooks and improve teachers' teaching ability,so that they can use the textbook better.
