The High School English Curriculum Standard(2017 edition)states that thinking quality as one of the key competencies of English subject together with language ability,cultural awareness and learning ability,and aims at cultivating all-round development of man.As one of the compulsory subjects,English is regarded as a foreign language in our country,which means reading is the major form of language input.Consequently,reading assignment as the supplement and extension of English teaching and learning,clearly plays a critical role in cultivating students' thinking quality.Cultivating it through various reading assignments should be the research focus of theoreticians and in-service teachers.The study investigates the current problems of reading assignment and the correlation between reading assignment and learners' thinking quality in high school by using questionnaires and interviews as operational tools.The study found that the present situation of thinking quality training is unsatisfactory;the problems of reading assignment lies in every level of thinking quality,namely the logical thinking,the critical thinking and the innovative thinking,specifically including the insufficient quantity and low quality;The reasons for the above-mentioned problems mainly include the deficient attention,the stereotyped practice,the limited reading material,the pressing teaching schedule and the single-styled examination;reading assignment is significantly and positively correlated to thinking quality.In attempt to change current problems with reading assignment,the author comes up with the corresponding suggestions for the design of English reading assignment in high school from aspects of cultivating logical thinking,critical thinking and innovative thinking based on the theory of Multiple Intelligences,aiming at optimizing the mode of English reading assignment and cultivating students' thinking quality effectively.
