A Report On The Weifang Food Valley Core Area Master Planning Interpreting Project

From March 12 to 18,2018,the reporter served as the interpreter for a consortium bidding for the Weifang Food Valley Core Area Master Planning Project.The bidding team was led by Dr.Zhang,the Chinese master planning expert,and Jeremy,the English expert,who worked in collaboration discussing about the project preparation and demonstration in order to win the bid.At the end of the interpreting project,the reporter received favorable feedback from these two major clients,and gained valuable experience.In the course of this job,the reporter identified on her part space for improvement in three areas.The first problem was mainly her little awareness of the linear thinking mode in the use of English,reflected in her frequent literal interpretation from Chinese to English,which caused the confusion on the part of the foreign client.The second problem was caused by her poor communicative skills,which was especially entailed in her inability to handle situations when she was frequently interrupted by added information.The last problem was her knowledge gaps in urban planning.Drawing upon previous studies and in particular her own reflections on her performance,the reporter worked out solutions to the problems.Firstly,the reporter should enhance her awareness of the requirement for logic and coherence in English,in order to effectively tackle the problem of loose logic in the expression of Chinese owing to the nature of the language or the clients' language habits.Secondly,the reporter should improve her communicative skills by learning to take a reasonable hold of the pace of interpreting and have further communication with clients.Thirdly,the reporter ought to expand her knowledge scope,familiarizing herself with the field of urban planning.The report offers a large number of texts based on real-situation interpreting recordings,and the reporter's reflection upon them.These results will help enhance future interpreters with actual interpreting work,and also provide reference and enrich interpretation research materials in the field of urban planning.
