The report is completed based on the English-Chinese translation task Evaluation of the Health Information Initiative of Canada the translator finished in June 2017 in Chengdu Yike Translation Studio. The Evaluation, with a total of 20,024 words in the source text and 30,284 words in the target text,is used as reading materials for Chinese experts attending an international conference held in China. The Evaluation was jointly conducted by the Evaluation Directorate of Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada to enhance the health information of Canada and promote the people's health. It can provide reference for the construction of health information system in China. The functional equivalence theory is applied to analyze the difficulties in the translation, and to propose corresponding solutions. The Functional Equivalence is put forward by the famous linguist Eugene A.Noida.The translation text becomes more coherent and accordant through the formal equivalence and the content equivalence, thus readers have a better understanding.Application of the functional equivalence theory to the analysis of the translation task shows that: 1)At the lexical level,in the light of the high frequency of acronyms in the source text, translation techniques of zero translation and compensation are adopted to achieve the equivalent translation.2)At the syntactic level, considering that there are many passive sentences, attributive clauses and long sentences in the source text, the translation techniques of voice shifting, combination and division are used to achieve the equivalence of the sentences.3)At the textual level, translation techniques of amplification and omission are employed by adding or deleting some words or phrases to maintain the cohesion and coherence of the translation to achieve the equivalence of the discourse. The report first expounds the translation task including its background, objective and importance,as well as requirements.Second, the preparation before translation is analyzed, involving the analysis of source text, collection of terms, review of functional equivalence theory and selection of translation tools.Third, the report places emphasis on the third chapter, case analysis by applying functional equivalence theory is to explore and summarize the translation techniques adopted in the translation at the level of vocabulary, syntax and discourse,to achieve the natural equivalence. The translation task is evaluated at last. The analysis of this report shows that functional equivalence theory can be used to solve problems in translating English for science and technology.
