Report On The C-E Translation Of Soft News In People's Daily (2018.9-2018.12)

Soft news is an important form of news writing which features rich rhetorical devices and cultural information.Standing out from various ways of external communication,it is playing an increasingly important role under the background of China's vigorous advocacy of "cultural soft power" and "going outside".Soft news translation is a kind of cross-cultural communication process.Due to the disparity of culture,writing style as well as reading habits between Chinese and English readers,it is difficult to adopt traditional full translation methods in news translation.That requires translators to adjust the original text to present the most suitable translation texts with maximum information to cater to foreign readers' tastes.The Translation Variation Theory,based on the reader's needs,makes an orderly adaptation of the original text on the premise of following the basic principles of faithfulness and smoothness,and taking full account of the reader's aesthetic taste and appreciation.Thus it is theoretically scientific and practically operable.This paper chooses nine Chinese news reports related to Chinese culture covering Chinese festival,solar terms,tourism spots,painting and calligraphy,literary works,movies from online People's Daily as the original text for further exploration of Chinese-English translation,combined with concrete examples to introduce the application of seven translation methods in the translating process,that is,addition,deletion,combination,condensation,edition,narration and adaptation,The report consists of six parts:the first part is a brief introduction,which mainly introduces the significance,background and objectives of the research.The second part is the task description,including task information and research focus.The third part is the task process divided into translation preparation,translation process and post-translation proofreading.The fourth part is the theoretical framework,in which the author introduces the definition and characteristics of soft news,the basic information of Translation Variation Theory,and seven important translation methods.Case study is the main body of this report,contributing to analyzing the difficulties encountered in the process of translating the original text from the lexical and syntactic levels respectively,and illustrating how to solve the problems by using the seven methods of Translation Variation Theory through concrete examples.The sixth part is a summary of the whole translation project.The translator elaborates on her experience and shortcomings in the process of translation,with a view to bringing some inspiration to the translation practice of such type of text.
