This is a project report on the Chinese translation of financial texts. The source text is selected from the ILO Research Department Working Paper-Are Remittances Good for Labor Markets in Low and Middle Income Countries and Fragile Countries? In this paper,a systematic analysis of the impact of remittances on labor market outcomes has been conducted from the aspects of labor supply and demand. The author first analyzes the linguistic features of the source text which is a type of non-literary text, covering the field of economy and statistics. It is characterized by standard and rigorous vocabulary as well as long and complicated clauses. Then the author defines the difficulty in translation from the aspect of style, lexis, syntax and discourse, including stylistic equivalence, polysemy, technical terms, discourse cohesion and coherence. In addition, corresponding translating techniques are put forward under the guidance of Nida's functional equivalence theory. At the stylistic level, corresponding and recasting are helpful to achieve stylistic equivalence;at the lexical level, the lexical equivalence can be made possible through contextual analysis, conversion and annotation;at the syntactical level, the voice accommodation and sentence reinvention are employed to deal with the translation of passive voice and long and complex clauses;at the discourse level,it is important to adjust the cohesive devices and follow the logic of receptors to achieve discourse cohesion and coherence. In the end,the author made a conclusion of this translation. When translating financial and statistical texts,it is necessary for the translator to master both professional knowledge and combine theories and practice, striving to achieve functional equivalence through exact words, smooth sentences, cohesive and coherent discourse and consistent style.
