A Practice Report On The Interpreting For The Introductory Meeting Of Chengdu Daqi Environmental Technology Company

The NGO PYXERA Global facilitates mutually beneficial partnerships between the public,private,and social sectors worldwide.From August 13 th to August 25 th,2018,PYXERA Global and one of its partners-the US 3M Company-jointly implemented a corporate consulting and empowerment project named 3M Impact in Chengdu.The 3M company designated 13 professionals of different fields from its branches in nine countries to participate in the project as consultants.These foreign consultants were divided into four teams by 3M and PYXERA Global,each team working with one Chengdu local company or organization.Daqi Environmental Technology Company was one of the Chengdu local companies in the project.In the afternoon of August 13,2018,Daqi Company held an introductory meeting with the 3M consulting team.At the meeting,Mr.Li,the General Manager of Daqi Company introduced the company in detail,and clarified their expectations for consultations from the project.The author served as the interpreter for the entire meeting,which lasted for about three hours.Based on the above-mentioned interpreting task,this practice report summarizes the problems and difficulties that the interpreter has experienced in relation to the following three aspects: 1)disconnected sentences,2)parallel components,3)different English accents.Under the guidance of Gile's Effort Model of consecutive interpreting,this report proposes corresponding interpreting strategies,namely,1)generalizing information,2)taking notes in a vertical form,3)using combination and appropriate omission,4)pre-task preparation for the accents,5)increasing reliance on listening comprehension and 6)using reconstruction.The first strategy is proposed for tackling disconnected sentences.The second and the third are suggested for addressing parallel components,and the fourth,fifth,sixth are recommended for coping with different English accents.This report aims at providing certain materials and references for meeting interpreting and related studies.
