Global cities are on the front lines of the world's most pressing challenges: they are targets of terrorism, vulnerable to natural disasters, fraught with inequality, and plagued by urban violence.By choosing the 2018 Chicago Forum on Global Cities as interpreting material, the interpreter wishes to draw more attention to these challenges and thus inspire more innovative solutions. And more importantly, this offers the interpreter an opportunity to analyze the problems she encountered in the interpreting process and make improvements accordingly afterwards. What poses difficulties to the interpreting is the wide range of topics discussed in the forum as well as the speakers' different styles. The interpreter needs to acquire the general knowledge in many different fields and get familiar with every speaker's style within a short time in order to fulfill this task.According to Gile's Effort Model of simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter classifies the challenges she encountered in the interpreting process into three aspects, which are challenges in Listening and Analysis,Short-term Memory and Production. In the Listening and Analysis aspect, accents, noises and grammatical mistakes by the speakers are the main problem triggers;in Short-term Memory, challenges mainly result from high rate of delivery, complicated sentence structures and long personal titles;in Production, proper names in the speech,self-corrections and repetitions by the speakers are the causes of problems.Different coping tactics are employed to deal with these challenges, including delaying the response, generalization, segmentation, explaining, omission and so on.The interpreter hopes this report can help other fellow interpreters become aware of some typical problems in simultaneous interpreting and better understand the importance of balancing effort distribution to achieve good performance in future tasks.
