As the most important means of conveying information,translation plays a vital role in the communication among different languages and cultures.Sentence is the basic unit of discourse,therefore,good translation of sentences can lay a solid foundation for discourse translation as well as be the basic skills a translator should have.Analyzing and translating long sentences in Chinese is an important part in Chinese-English translation.This thesis selects a short story from a novel collection If Snow Blocks Door as the source text to explore the translation skills of Chinese long sentences so as to make the translation not only conform to the English expression but also be faithful to the original text.This thesis takes the translation of long sentences in If Snow Blocks Door as the research object.First of all,it analyzes the definition and types of long sentences.On the basis of this,long sentences in the novel are analyzed and classified,long sentences with coordinate relation,long sentences with adversative relation,long sentences with progressive relation.In order to make the translation readable and meet the expectation of target readers,three translation principles are proposed,aesthetic principle,Skopos principle,coherent principle.Then,the author mainly discusses and explores the translation methods for three types of long sentences based on three translation principles,and the methods include: explication of logical relation,employment of participial phrases,application of prepositional phrases,restructuring the meaning elements,nominalization and division.The translator hopes that the translation can not only be in line with the way of the expression of English sentences,accepted by the target readers,but also reproduce the features of the novel,and promote the further communication and cultural exchange.
