An Interpreting Practice Report On The "1st Pu’er International Specialty Coffee Expo" From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

Coffee has been an important part of Yunnan’s economy since its introduction to Yunnan in1904 and the thriving coffee growing industry in the early 1950 s.The “1st Pu’er International Specialty Coffee Expo” was grandly held in Pu’er City,Yunnan Province,on January 29,2018.The three-day expo,organized by the Yunnan International Coffee Exchange(YCE),is an international and professional coffee expo hosted in the main coffee growing area in China for the first time as a significant move to gather experts,scholars and entrepreneurs from home and abroad to promote Pu’er coffee.The interpreter,who is also the author of this report and has participated in several coffee forums and been familiar with coffee experts of the YCE,is assigned to undertake the interpreting task which is a simultaneous interpretation for the speakers from home and abroad.The report consists of an interpreting report on the expo and the opening speech and a keynote speech given by Mr.Hou Jiazhi,Deputy General Manager of the Yunan Guodian Coffee Co.Ltd.In the report,the interpreter lists the problems she encountered in the interpreting process and seeks for the solutions with the employment of the Relevance Theory proposed by Deirdre Wilson and Dan Sperber.Under the guidance of the theory and with a consideration of context and speaker’s intentions,the interpreter presents the original interpretation and the revised interpretation and makes a thorough analysis of how she manages to solve the problems with the adoption of relevant interpreting strategies such as paraphrasing,amplification,sentence reconstruction,and explicature,which undoubtedly will be greatly helpful for the interpreter to handle the same problems that may occur in her future interpreting tasks.The interpreting report comprises four parts.The first part mainly describes the interpreting task in terms of the source,content,and requirements;the second part demonstrates the whole interpreting process from preparation to post-evaluation;the third part,case studies,elaborates the significance of the adoption of the Relevance Theory and its related strategies through a careful comparison between the original and the revised interpretations;the last part is a summary of the report and the interpreter hopes that her interpreting report on the basis of the Relevance Theory can be helpful to the coffee and other beverages related interpretation.
