| The term "explicitation" was first described by Vinay and Darbelnet as a stylistic translation technique,which consists of making explicitness in the target language that remains implicit in the source language because it is apparent from either the context or the situation that occurs.As the study on explicitation gains momentum,it has been widely used in translation and interpreting practices.Ewa Gumul divided the explicitation strategies in simultaneous interpreting into 16 types,of which 5 categories had been analyzed in case studies of this report.Namely,adding connectives;categorial shifts of cohesive devices(i.e.from vague cohesion to an even more explicit cohesion);lexical specification;meaning specification(i.e.articulating ideas retrievable or inferable or the cognitive context of the text from the preceding part)and also,the additional explanatory remarks are considered necessary.This report is based on a simultaneous interpreting task of a simulated conference called2017 Cross-Border Trade Promotion Conference between Panzhou City and Southeast,South Asian Countries.It was held at Kunming International Exhibition Center on November 22,2017 by Panzhou Municipal Government and Kunman Company.Leaders from Panzhou Municipal Government,directors from Consulate General of ASEAN countries in Kunming and representatives from well-known business associations and enterprises attended this conference and delivered their speeches.The difficulty of this research lies in contents of the following speeches are very formal in language including a large scale of terminologies and numbers.Meanwhile,complex and lengthy sentence patterns had caused high information density as they boast such characters.Given the four major constraints in simultaneous interpreting,which are namely,time constraint,limited short-term memory capacity,linearity control and unshared knowledge,the interpreter analyzed the transcription of the source speech and the interpretation using explicitation strategy for reference by adopting Ewa Gumul’s 16 explicitation types for different interpretation problems.This report also analyzed various problems and studied different application types of explicitation during the simultaneous interpretation task and counted the proportion of specific types to illustrate how to use the explicitation strategy as the corresponding coping tactics under the four major constraints of such circumstances. |
