Pause is a common phenomenon that exists in consecutive interpreting. However, improper pauses would contribute to the disfluency of translation, hinder the transmission of information and the understanding of the audience, which should be avoided and overcome. This thesis is a case study based on the author's consecutive interpretation of the mock conference of "Dominican Investment and Economic Opportunities Forum".By building a bilingual corpus of the source language and target language transcripts,14 typical cases will be analyzed in order to explore the forms and causes of improper pauses, and corresponding coping strategies will be proposed.Based on the predecessors' study and the author's practical experience, the definition and classification of improper pause are presented, and the causes of improper pauses are summarized as following: listening and comprehension difficulty, inefficient note-taking,and language expression disfluency.Accordingly, coping strategies of improper pauses are listed as: interpreting preparation, listening and comprehension ability,note-taking system, and language expression. It is hoped that this study will be instructive for the practice of Spanish interpreting training and provide a reference for the further study of improper pauses.
