A Report On English Interpreting Of Gengcun Village Folktale Cultural Event

Chinese folktales and mythological stories enjoy a long history,and many villages rich in folktales have been well received abroad.A large number of foreigners are attracted to visit them in person.However,few interpreting studies home and abroad related to this topic have been initiated so far.This report is an interpreting report,which describes the interpreting practice process that the author performed as an escort interpreter during “2018 Gengcun Village Folktale Cultural Event — Welcome the Society of Nvwa Story of America for Attending the Debut Publishing Ceremony of Selected Gengcun Village Folktales”.This event lasted from October 12 th to October 14 th,2018.Guided by the interpretive theory,the author adhered to the triangular mode which is composed of three parts,namely,meaning comprehension,indispensable supplemented information and de-verbalization.Folktales and mythological stories related to the interpreting task were selected as specific cases for detailed analyses.The pivotal role that the interpretive theory had played in this interpreting practice was expounded.Through adopting interpreting strategies and techniques,including literal interpretation,free interpretation,amplification and transliteration interpretation with added information,the author managed to analyze and solve some typical problems in this interpreting task,such as difficulties in understanding the dialects as well as in interpreting the titles of folktales and historical relics in lexical level.Thereafter,the author conducted reflection based on the feedback from the clients and interpreting quality control.The author finds that interpreters may encounter potential difficulties in regulating their thinking logic and language expressions in a field interpreting.Therefore,more attention should be paid to the application of theories to practice so as to enhance their interpreting skills and overall interpreting capacity.And hopefully,this report can provide some reference for interpreting strategic study and interpreting quality control.
