A Report On Translation Of Environmental News In The Huffington Post (Excerpt)

Environmental news broadcast provides the main channel for people to learn about world environmental information.Translation of foreign media environmental news helps Chinese people better understand the world climate change,helps to solve the existing or potential environmental problems in China,and promotes the sustainable development of environment.Therefore,the translation of English environmental news is of great significance to improve people's understanding of the world environment and solve environmental problems.Under the guidance of Skopos theory of the German scholar Hans J.Vermeer,the author selects 13 pieces of environmental news from the Huffington Post and completes the translation practice.In writing the translation report,the author summarizes the problems encountered in the translation of different parts of the news including the title,the introduction and the text.Appropriate solutions to the problems are analyzed through case study involving different translation skills adopted,so as to provide reference for further translation studies of similar texts.The main findings are as follows: under the guidance of the Skopos theory,news translation should follow the principle of accuracy to achieve the effectiveness and integrity of information transmission.Specifically speaking,in terms of vocabulary,skills like key point supplement,word addition can be used to translate news terms.In terms of syntax,semantic characterization and extension can be adopted for translation of long sentences,too detailed expressions and sentences without subject in English news.In terms of discourse,format transformation and word order adjustment are often adopted to translate the parallel structure texts.The report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is an introduction,which mainly introduces the research background,significance and purpose,as well as the literature review of the research on environmental news at home and abroad.The second chapter describes the process of translation,including preparation before translation,in-translationand post-translation review.The third chapter analyzes the main features of the original text and the theoretical basis of translation.The fourth chapter is case studies,which analyzes the problems encountered in the translation process and the solutions under the Skopos theory.The fifth chapter is the conclusion,summarizing the main findings and limitations of this translation practice.
