Fluency has been identified as a mark of aptitude for interpreting and a criterion for the evaluation of the interpreter's output,while the improper pause is one of the forms of disfluency.Therefore,how to overcome or reduce improper pauses should be a problem that interpreter should consider.This thesis is an empirical study based on the author's Korean-Chinese consecutive interpretation in the simulated lecture entitled“a young Korean intellectual who stayed in China in the 1920 s and 1930 s ”.The thesis mainly explores the causes of the improper pauses and offers some strategies to reduce improper pauses.According to the study and research results,there are three main reasons for improper pause: first,difficulties of listening comprehension;second,not being able to decipher notes;third,difficulties of grammatical and lexical formulation.In order to tackle these problems,the author gives some strategies from the aspects of listening comprehension,notes,language structure and vocabulary such as sentence segmentation and deverbalization.
