| As universities in China become increasingly involved with the rest of the world,more and more university news releases publicizing the development of China's higher education are being translated into English.Quality Chinese-English translations of these texts play a significant role in attracting overseas talent and enhancing worldwide cooperation.However,most of such texts are structured in a way that is not strictly in line with a standard English news report and are generally loaded with phrases and sentences typical of Chinese characteristics.How to appropriately communicate the real intention of such texts without compromising the readability of target texts remains a challenge for translators.This thesis is based on a case study regarding the application of trans-editing in the Chinese-English translation of the ?Double First-Class Initiative? related news releases by several universities in Shanghai.In this case study,the author analyzes features of these news releases and addresses three types of problems encountered during the translation process,namely lengthy and unclear headlines,tedious leads with inappropriately arranged news elements,and body components characterized by repetition,redundancy and a linear structure(as opposed to an inverted pyramid one).Through case analyses,the author proposes the following strategies: i)properly omit,rewrite or restructure headlines;ii)generalize proper nouns and trans-edit news elements in leads;iii)neatly arrange body parts in an inverted pyramid pattern.Hopefully,this study will help improve the Chinese-English translation of university news releases and give fresh insight into the application of trans-editing in this type of translation. |
