A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of The Map:A Beginner's Guide To Doing Research In Translation Studies(Chapters 1-2)

In recent years,Translation Studies has made great progress in China and the methodology of it has emerged as a novel research hot spot.The Map:A Beginner 's Guide to Doing Research in Translation Studies(henceforth The Map),which is written by Jenny Williams and Andrew Chesterman,is an introduction to doing research in Translation Studies.The author is honored to translate chapters 1-2 of The Map into Chinese,on the base of which the significance of logical thinking in translation is explored in the report.The Map is a book on basic methods of Translation Studies,providing an introduction to detailed methods,principles and theories.As an instructional book of scientific theory,the source text is written in strongly logical and highly accurate English with professionality and objectivity.Many terminolog,ies of-Translation Studies are also involved.Therefore,the translator is required to eliminate ambiguity and to reproduce the intention of the author precisely.The report tries to elaborate the guiding role of logical thinking from perspectives of identifying the meaning of the word,clarifying the implicit logic in the original and checking the logic in the version.Typical case analyses are presented as support.This report consists of four chapters.Chapter I describes the background of the translation task,reasons for selecting the source text and introduction to the source text.Chapter 2 describes the process of the task,including preparatory work before translation,problems and solutions during translation,and modification work after translation.Chapter 3 discusses logical thinking and its significance in translation,followed by typical cases and analysis to illustrate the significance of logical thinking in translation from the perspective of accurate understanding of the original,logical explicitation of the original,and logical checking of the version.Chapter 4 points out major difficulties and implications during translation and the writing of the report.In light of the English-Chinese translation practice of The Map(Chapters 1-2),the author proposes that logical thinking runs through the process of translation and translators are expected to apply logical thinking to guiding translation task for accuracy.
