2020 marks a significant year for space activities.China will carry out the Mars exploration mission for the first time in history.The cooperation and innovation in space activities have been gaining momentum,with all social sectors involved in the popularization of space activities.To cater to the need from the public and to popularize the development in explorations to Mars and the space,the First International Forum on the Quest for Mars was held at the Beijing Planetarium on March 30,2019.The author undertook the interpreting task for the forum,and with thorough preparation,she obtained accordant appreciation.This report reviews the task for future improvement in the interpreting proficiency.Under the framework of the Interpretive Theory of Translation,the report analyzes the problems in the E-C consecutive interpreting for the popular science speech The Case for Space,and discusses its guidance in popular science interpreting.In the intriguing speech,the speaker used plain words to introduce profound scientific knowledge in a persuasive tone.For interpreting,the interpreter should convey accurate information with native and clear expressions.The Interpretive Theory of Translation is a distillate from interpreting experience of Danica Seleskovitch and Marianne Lederer.To this day,the theory has been according great importance by the worldwide interpreting industry,for its guidance on interpreting practices.The findings in the case analysis are demonstrated as follows.First,interpreters should accumulate adequate topic-related knowledge during the preparation.And in the process of interpreting,these cognitive inputs help to understand the speaker's stance and style as a way of presenting his/her emotion and unspoken words.Second,colloquial style of repetitional statement entangles the target text with redundancy.The interpreter should break free from language form to pursue equivalence in meaning.Also,written language should be avoided.The interpretation is preferred to be emphatic in style for the purpose of conveying the focal points.Third,in reformulation,the interpreter ought to think of the audience and their acceptability of information based on their epistemics.It is required to consider the knowledge gaps and refine the rhetoric expression.Clearer meaning would minimize the difficulty in understanding the target texts.It is expected that the report can inspire interpreters to achieve better performance in popular science interpreting,and further promote the popularization of science culture.
