A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Academic Papers On Translation Quality Assessment

Translation quality assessment(TQA)has long been a key issue in translation industry.It not only has profound significance for perfection of the translation theory system,but also contributes to the practical application of translation.The paper selects two academic papers on TQA,which are published on Linguistica Antverpiensia,New Series: Themes in Translation Studies,2017(16),to perform translation practice analysis.The two papers both have clear logic and objective expressions.The first paper The Thorny Problem of Translation and Interpreting Quality talks about TQA in overall,and the second paper Acceptability of Machine-translated Content: A Multilanguage Evaluation by Translators and End-users is an experiment report on acceptability of machine translated content.The report aims to analyze the significance of TQA,describe preparations,translation process and quality control.The report makes analysis and proposes translation methods from lexical level,syntactic level and discourse level.At lexical level,proper names and new technical terms are common in the ST.The translator searches for proper names and takes the context into consideration to determine the meaning of the proper names.Besides,the translator figures out the formation of the technical terms and refers to the related field and the context to determine the translation of the new technical terms.At syntactic level,there are many long and complex sentences,nominalized structures and passive structures.Long and complex sentences are processed by using kernel sentences and analyzing differences between English and Chinese.Nominalized structures are translated as verbs or verb phrases.In addition,passive structures are mostly translated as active structures.At discourse level,the source texts are cohesive and coherent.Pronouns and logic connections are used to retain the cohesion and coherence.By completing the report,the translator learns more about translation quality assessment and has a deeper understanding for translation practice.At the meanwhile,the translator attaches importance to the text type of translation contents and realizes it is difficult to keep the style and linguistic features of ST.In addition,the translator learns that translation problems should be analyzed and strategies should be summarized upon translation.In this way,the translation ability can be gradually improved.
