Film is a popular art form.With the increasing internationalization of film culture,many excellent Chinese films go abroad and flood into foreign film markets.During that process,Chinese film translation plays a crucial role in bridging the communication between Chinese and western cultures.The primary concern is Chinese film title translation.Film title is like the eye of a film.It should not only reflect the central content of the film,but also have enough attraction to undertake the responsibilities of publicity,cultural dissemination and other aspects.Film title is the essence of film content.Whether a film can successfully open the foreign market and achieve its advocating role,film title translation is the key.Film title translation has always been the focus of translation studies as well as cultural translation.As a typical cross-cultural communication form,Chinese film title translation is not only influenced by translation theories,but also restricted by cultural factors.Therefore,its translation methods and strategies will be different from other translations.Susan Bassnett is a famous British translator.Susan Bassnett's Cultural Translation Theory is different from traditional translation.It is culture that is in the first place in translation studies.As one of the representatives of the school of cultural translation,Susan Bassnett's Cultural Translation Theory has exerted a profound influence on translation studies in various fields.Cultural Translation Theory emphasizes the combination of translation studies and cultural studies,and advocates that culture should be regarded as a translation unit.Chinese film titles have distinct Chinese cultural elements,therefore,the translation should focus on cultural factors inside the film.In this sense,it is necessary to analyze Chinese film title translation from the perspective of Cultural Translation Theory.This paper attempts to analyze Chinese film titles,interpreting the translation strategies and methods mainly applied in Chinese film title translation,and study the application of Susan Bassnett's Cultural Translation Theory in Chinese film title translation practice.This paper first analyzes the formation and cultural elements of Chinese film titles.Secondly,this paper studies the values of Chinese film titles,namely informative value,commercial value,aesthetic value and cultural value.It further discusses the strategies of Chinese film title translation,domestication and foreignization with examples.Finally,on this basis,the author summarizes the enlightenment and directive role of Cultural Translation Theory in Chinese film title translation.This paper is conducive to foreign film lovers and professionals to understand Chinese films,promoting cultural communication and exchange.It is helpful for the export of Chinese films and the promotion of Chinese culture.It guides translators to focus on the target language culture,and making the translation more easily accepted by foreign audiences.It also guides translators to take cultural differences into consideration,so as to achieve cultural function equivalence and cultural transmission effect.In this paper,the directive role of Cultural Translation Theory in Chinese film title translation is further verified.
