With the acceleration of modernization and urbanization, intangible cultural heritage has been constantly taking a hit and safeguarding it has become a top priority. In recent years, new achievements have been made in the protection of intangible cultural heritage in China, and a large number of excellent documentaries related to it have emerged. The first season of The Chinese Handiwork,The Chinese Woodwork, has received positive and enthusiastic feedback since it was broadcast by CCTV-9 in September,2018.It is the first Chinese documentary that sets its sights on Chinese wood culture, aiming to draw attention to the beauty of Chinese traditional woodwork and raise public awareness of preserving intangible cultural heritage. The thesis is a report on the C-E subtitle translation of The Chinese Woodwork from the perspective of eco-translatology.There exist a lot of paratactic sentences,culture-loaded expressions, and colloquial expressions in the documentary. Therefore, not only time and space limitations but also some constraints from linguistic, cultural and communicative aspects are encountered in the process of translation. And in the field of contemporary translation studies in China,eco-translatology has attracted much attention since Professor Hu Gengshen proposed it in 2001.In this theory, translation methods are summarized as “three-dimensional transformations”,which focus on the adaptive transformations from the linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions respectively under the translation principle of“multi-dimensional adaptations and adaptive selections”.It can be clearlyseen that eco-translatology can play a significant guiding role in solving the difficulties in this translation project.Through research and analysis, this thesis discusses and puts forward some specific translation methods and techniques on the basis of ensuring that the target subtitle text is as concise as possible, that is,its number of characters per line is within the maximum.Specifically,in terms of the linguistic dimension, the methods of addition of linking words and conversion to participle structure can be adopted to translate paratactic sentences;as for the cultural dimension, the methods like literal translation, transliteration, combination of literal translation and transliteration and paraphrasing can be selected to translate culture-loaded expressions;with regard to the communicative dimension, the methods including clarification of vague expressions and integration of fragmented information can be applied to translate colloquial expressions. This report is expected to provide some valuable references for those who will translate subtitles of cultural documentaries like The Chinese Woodwork so as to contribute to spreading excellent traditional Chinese culture abroad.
