In the 21 st century when things are connected, learning materials used in elective courses of colleges and universities are becoming more and more diversified. To some extent, the introduction of English learning materials to university courses helps Chinese students to get access to cutting-edge knowledge and keep pace with the times. However,it also brings a series of challenges to both teachers and students of China.Among those problems,a serious one is students' misunderstanding of English learning materials.American Environmental History is such an English learning material. In April 2019,the author was commissioned to translate Chapters 9 and 10 of the book to meet the teaching needs of “American Environmental History and Culture”.After reading the original text, the author also reads some parallel texts and references, and finally determines the skopos theory as the guidance of this project. With the help of the theory, the author realizes the genuine combination of the theory, the text and translation strategies.Specifically, under the guidance of this theory's three rules——skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, the author flexibly adopts a variety of translation strategies to solve problems during translation, such as transliteration, annotation, repetition, conversion, addition and literal translation. This report mainly includes four parts: project introduction, project process, case analyses and conclusion, which sorts out key issues occurring in the course of translation and concludes that a correct translation theory is useful to improve the efficiency and quality of translation. It has both practical and theoretical meaning. On the one hand, the final translation of the original text can be directly used for teaching;on the other hand, the case analyses in the report may be helpful for the translation of English learning materials in elective courses in colleges and universities.
